Conlon Nancarrow - Study no. 3a for player piano (piano roll visualization)
Erratum: At 2:47, the highest voice should go F6-F7-G#6-A6-C7-G#6-A6-G6 (all Gs are natural in the video and audio).
This was the first piece by Nancarrow that I ever heard. At one point a video with the score existed (uploaded by thenameisgsarci), but it has since been deleted. It introduced me to the potential of polymeter. Unfortunately, it's still far ahead of nearly all music-processing software, even in 2021...
This piece is a set of variations over a standard "twelve-bar blues" ostinato. Maybe the variations are overlapping and in different meters, but I don't see any problem with that. Apparently, this was some of Nancarrow's earliest work for the player piano, and I find it much stronger than Study no. 1 (which I've also uploaded).
I try to stick to the score as much as possible, but here there is a major discrepancy between the score and the realization. Nancarrow indicates that every note should be fortissimo. With Sibelius sounds, the result is that the bass ostinato completely overpowers everything else; for this video, I've decreased the ostinato's velocity quite a bit in order to bring out the other voices and to make the audio sound more like the recordings on Nancarrow's piano. Also note that the colors sometimes change arbitrarily. The reason is that the tracks in my MIDI file correspond more to the score's staves than to the voices of the music; fixing this is not trivial.
Made in Sibelius, MidiEditor, MIDIVisualizer, and Kdenlive.

Errata: - Around 2:36 (the climax) some weirdness happens in the red voice. - At 2:41 notes in the purple voice should sustain as in the other voices. - The top note in the red voice at 4:30 should be E-flat, not E natural. This might be my favorite of his studies. It's a 17/18/19/20 tempo canon; purple notes belong to the 17-voice (here 85 whole notes per minute), green notes belong to the 18-...

Sorry for the ten seconds of silence at the end. The musical data was entered from Nancarrow's score, so there may be some discrepancies with the actual piano roll. The notes of the 4-against-5 ostinato are colored purple (for the 5/8 voice) and orange (for the 4/8 voice). It's interesting how the colors show how the tempo shifts every four notes. Video created using Sibelius 7.5, MIDIVisualize...

As of 2021-11-21, this video has 2 dislikes. Info, album notes, track timings, etc. below. I found this record the other day in the 99¢ section of the record store. I bought it for sampling, and definitely didn't expect it to be as nice as it is. This hasn't been uploaded to UA-cam yet (although Discogs says it's a compilation, so you can likely find all of the individual tracks), so I decided ...

As of 2021-11-21, this video has 56 dislikes. Frank Zappa's "The Black Page Drum Solo/Black Page #1" (audio from Zappa In New York). The sheet music in the video comes from two sources. The drum transcription is *not* mine; it was transcribed by Alain Tissot, in 2005. It was the highest quality of transcription that I could find. I made the second score with the melody as a kind of facsimile of...

Frank Zappa's "The Dangerous Kitchen" (audio from The Man From Utopia).
Challenging music is good for the brain. There is logic behind the madness, just concentrate on the hi-hat. It’s got a steady rhythm throughout the whole piece.
This is like setting Finnegans Wake to music.
"Play Frank Zappa." Mozart: "Now THAT is a challenge. That IS a challenge."
Grew up listening to this album and I still have it memorized. So awesome to hear it again!
ANY ONE WHO DISLIKES THIS ,DON'T GET IT , MUSIC IS OVER THEIR HEADS ,ZZZZZZZAAAAPPPAAAA
This sounds like a shitty midi.
1:58 2:14
Great work. However, the drum part should be the exactly the same rhythmically as the melodic part.
This absolutely rocks
Hi, no idea if you're still receiving alerts about these videos but I think a few years ago you were posting about errata in the FZ Guitar Book? Do you still have anything on that, the Zappateers thread that it was being discussed on was deleted back in 2020 when the old site went down.
This reminds me of zelda tears of the kingdom
This music is relaxing as it is not too heavy and rhythmically as well melodically interesting but not invigorating as it is played on the synclavier

I am pretty sure he flatted note #4,371,554.
We can read sheet music, but not enough to hurt our playing. 🤠👍🇺🇲🇮🇱🏴☠️🐟🎸🥁🎷🎻🪕🎙️
at the second septuplet you've put 2 B's when it's 2 G's sorry for nitpickin btw 2.01
if it ain't one thing it's another
Hi, is there a chance to have the sheet music available for download (amazing work !) ?
Beginning sounds like my 3 year old nephew got a hold of my drums. Lol. But I dig zappa. Definitely creative and thought out. Like a musical scientist. 😉 I bet you zappa composed pieces like this just to f with players auditioning for his band and the pleasure he got out of the first 400 or so players failing to nail it while zappa smirks and screams....." there's the door....NEXT!!! "😆
I blended this beat over a hip hop tune out for a rapper I was producing for. Then I got shot.
Is there a midi link for it? I want to remix that

Did anybody dance?
Black Page matters!
I'd love to see Number 21... 🙂
this is excellent work... really a tremendous resource for nancarrow study (and just fun to watch)... have you any intention of completing the full set of studies for pp?
….. I knew you’d be surprised…….!

Technically brilliant!!! One thing this lacks is Soul.
No, actually it doesn't !
Ok, boomer, go to listen Beatles and their "masterpieces" while other people will to listen amazing difficult music "wItHoUt sOuL"
As a musician, I really love both the music of Zappa and the Beatles, and I think that there is a lot of soul in both, only in a very different way! But I get why some people are unable to see the soul in Zappa's music when given an example like "the black page".... The people that are not familiar with the music of Frank Zappa have to know that he used to write in a lot of different styles, and that he wrote this song "the black page" as a simple exercise in polyrhythms that he would give as a test to the drummers he was auditioning... And one day, Terry Bozzio(one of the best drummer ever) nailed it perfectly, and just like that Zappa had found his new drummer ! So for those who want to see the soul in Zappa's music, I really wouldn't recommend this song... But the man wrote something like 70 albums in 30 years, and as I mentioned earlier, he used to write in a lot of different styles, so if I were you I would investigate a little bit more before forming an opinion ! And if you want to form an opinion about his music, I recommend that you listen to at least 5 or 10 of his albums, and I guarantee that you will gain some perspective !
@@chegevara8896 I don't know if you are talking to me or to the person who thinks this song lacks soul ?
Could you post the dogs barking one?
Composition lesson's for the hothoused.
AWESOME! I'm going to start using your video in my college courses when I teach Nancarrow. Is this MIDI audio? It's quite a bit slower than the other recordings I've heard (which are usually around 4 minutes). Is this slow, or are the others too fast?
Yes, this is MIDI audio. I'm using the tempos given in the score, which are indeed slower than most recordings.
@@Animatronicity Interesting, thank you. I wonder why the recordings tend to be noticeably faster, whether it's accidental (a problem with how he computed the tempos vs how he punched the cards, or something to do with the motors on his pianos) or intentional (an aesthetic choice of his, later life, or an aesthetic choice by someone else supervising the recordings).
@@dollchristopher In this case it simplifies the tempo calculations so that the tempos in the score can all be integers.
geilo
Terry Bozzio?
Hadn't listened to that version in a long time. Nice work!
My cat makes this sound in his head at 3:30 in the morning. KIDDING, DAMN IT ! This it the dreaded and feared Black Page!!!❤
